about fashion

(in yet another attempt at procrastination)
I like clothes. Most people call me fashionable, and I beam when they say my outfit looks nice. I've received comments like:

"Just how big is your closet?" -- because I haven't repeated an outfit since my senior year in college.
"Ate, lahat ba kayo naka-costume?" -- when I served as an usher for my org's freshman event
"Every morning, I look forward to what you'll wear." -- during a week long camp when I was in high school
"Nakakatuwa ka. Lagi kang naka-costume." -- a random comment from my fave psych prof

A stranger called out to me once to ask for directions to a cosplay event at UP because she thought I was in cosplay, professors would ask me ,"where's the party?", I received fashion awards in my org, my whole psych batch (a feat since psych majors are really fashionable), and once during a workshop where I documented for my prof. A classmate once took a picture of me (because she liked my outfit so much), classmates would ask what's my theme for the day, commenting that I change my image everyday. I am usually over-dressed (and under-dressed when it counts).

I chanced upon yet another fashion blog (Laureen Uy is my newest style icon) and it got me considering having my own style blog as well. Like really considering. And made me want to write down what is my "fashion psyche" (not the best term, but I really like the word psyche).

My fashion pegs: Kate Middleton, anything classic and lady-like, retro (because most of the clothes I wear are really from that era), Japanese/Harajuku, preppy.school girl, manga shoujo

- I could not pull off rocker-chick looks, sporty, punk, or something overly sexy (short shorts, sheer tops)
- I realized that I'm too matchy-matchy. My shoes would match my accesories, or there would be a dominant color theme. I'm too put together.
- I love head pieces: fascinators, berets, headbands, putting necklaces on my head to spice an outfit or put the whole outfit together.
- I need to experiment more. Bolder prints. Louder colors. Unusual cuts and materials. I usually play it safe: nudes or basic colors, basic pieces. I need to start looking for loud pieces to add to my wardrobe. And look for more pants/jeans.
- I usually color block. I need to start layering again and mix prints.
- Since I usually wear skirts (I only have less than 10 pairs of pants), I tend to look too dressy (since I usually wear heels as well). In fact, when I was a freshman, I was always in a skirt and stilettos (never mind that I had classes on the 4th floor). It was plausible since our driver drove me to school. But I soon found out that not only is it hard to keep wearing heels (bad for my scoliosis), it is not sensible to wear to commute (especially in the rain and rugged roads).
- But wearing heels didn't deter me from participating in extreme stuff. For a class project, I have run in heels and climbed a tree in heels. I have even played ultimate freesbie in heels (and a tutu skirt and tiara) in the Sunken Garden (very rocky and dusty).
- Now I've traded my heels with ballet flats, broques/oxfords, and boots. Still fashionable yet more sensible. And weather appropriate.
- I usually wear stockings (colored and printed) and socks to add oomph to an outfit (and keep my outfit still decent even with shorts or mini skirts). Yes, I'm conservative. And since I don't have a lot of pants, I usually wear leggings and shorts.
- I've mentioned this earlier: I haven't repeated an outfit since my senior year in college. It started as a personal challenge, and now I can't stop. I was fixing my closet once and I realized I had so many clothes I haven't worn yet. So my sister challenged me to exhaust my wardrobe. I haven't exhausted it yet. There was also one semester when I challenged myself to wear something purple every tuesday and thursday (still not repeating an outfit). It was really tough, and there were times when I became late for class because I couldn't find an outfit that works. But I was able to do it. My classmates even thought my fave color was purple (it's actually blue).
- I don't buy clothes from the mall. I always feel like it is such a waste. So I wear my grandmother's 70's clothes (still in perfect condition), hand me downs from my aunt, and unique finds from ukay-ukay. The look for less.
- choosing an outfit depends on a lot of factors: the weather, the occasion, if there's a car or not. Sometimes, an outfit starts from the shoes or a headpiece or an accessory. Sometimes it starts with a concept (preppy/princess/doll) or color-matching. Inspiration starts anywhere.

And now I want to change my style. More sheer pieces, structured tops, mullet skirts/dresses, skinny jeans, slacks, bright pumps, flats, loud colors. More statement pieces. Time for another trip to ukay-ukay.

(must share more pictures here. If only I knew how to take good enough pictures to show)
