How I became an Arashi fan girl

I love Arashi. The JE unit composed of bishies who sing, dance, act, and host their way into the hearts of millions. I'm not Japanese and I don't understand Japanese, but through local TV's dubbed jdoramas and the dedicated and awesome subbers and translators out there who pour their hearts and souls into subbing/translating shows and songs of these 5 idols, I got hooked.

Just like a lot of Arashi fans, I was jun-baited. I was in my senior year in High School when I friend of mine gave me a photo of the actor who played Sawada Shin in the live-action version of Gokusen. I liked Gokusen then and I watched it on Animax. So when I found out that there was a live-action drama, of course I had to check it out. And so I met Matsumoto Jun, my ichiban (until I saw Yamada Taro Monogatari). That was back in 2005.

At first, Matsujun was the only one I could distinguish, and then several PVs later, I could correctly point out which one was nino, then ohno, and finally I could match their names with their faces. (I'm really bad with recognizing names and faces).

I was focused on my studies so I wasn't really into developing my new found fandom...until I watched Kimi wa Petto. For weeks I wished I could have my own Momo. His smile was addicting.

I got hooked on their music after watching their performances on Music Station (when it was still on Animax). There is something special about their songs and their dance. Even before I could understand what they were singing about. Maybe it was the beat of their songs or the joy you could feel from them when they perform, but there was something that drew me in.

I got to watch snippets of their variety shows on youtube and I found out how funny they were and how comfortable they were with each other. These guys really are friends...not the fake or superficial friendship other groups formed under the same circumstances have. Maybe that was what drew me to them. The bromance (not in the shounen ai sense).

So for a long time, Matsujun was my ichiban, even though ohno could dance and sing better, nino could act better, sho was sexier, and aiba more endearing and funny, there was something about his intensity that makes up for all that. Until I watched Yamada Taro Monogatari.

I never realized just how kissable sho's lips were. And how sexy he looks in black. Then I found out more things about him. Like the fact that he graduated from Keio University with a degree in Economics. and that he was chosen as a new caster for NEWS ZERO. That's amazing for an idol who is only expected to look good.

After watching Yoiko no Mikata and the Quiz Show 2, I was like, "Matsujun who?"

So now I am watching all the shukudai-kuns, himitsus and shiyagares I could possibly find (legally) to get my arashi fix. They're like a drug. You'll just keep wanting more.
